What are online stores and web platforms?

Through food online stores, web platforms and online market places you can order your food and do your shopping. For example, packages are offered with local, environmentally friendly and / or animal friendly meat through online supermarkets without a physical store. Currently, more and more meal boxes are on the market. Other websites map food providers and provide food delivery services. In addition, the number of virtual communities that are active in food is increasing.

Why online stores and web platforms?

As a result of changing consumer needs, new sales channels have been created. Consumers want to buy their products at any time of the day and have a strong preference for home delivery of groceries. Online stores are the ones who respond smartly to this need.

Online selling offers the possibility to provide more information to the consumer. Extended descriptions, specifications, photos and videos - like the farmers' videos at Willem & Drees - help consumers get more knowledge about all products from all over the world. This allows consumers to make more informed choices. In addition, these data provide the opportunity to apply personalization and advise consumers in the field of nutrition.

What does it look like in practice and / or what are examples of companies?

The best-known online food concepts are Albert Heijn, Jumbo, HelloFresh and Picnic. But other parties such as Hoogvliet and Mathijs meal box, have also started to make the transition to online sales.  While only a few percent of the food is now being sold online, it is expected that in 2020 it may be as much as 20 per cent.

Who are the main initiators?
